Much of
this web site describes the traps that complicate the passage from dependence on external
incentives to self-determination. Your guide is William J. Dubin, who received his
doctoral degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa in 1972, and has been providing
treatment services ever since. On line communication such as Instant
Messaging and e-mail makes possible new formats for information transfer
enabling a psychologist, with knowledge of the principles of behavior, and a
client, with knowledge of his or her unique biography, to
have a meeting of minds
at a distance. Such a collaboration
can have particular value in assisting the client
to
achieve important goals.
There are advantages and disadvantages to online
professional consultation. On the down side, we lose access to the nonverbal cues of face-to-face
interaction. However, there are several advantages to an online collaboration,
including:
- Communication is available during or close to crises and high risk situations.
- An online collaboration is conducive to the long-term, low intensity focus that has
been shown to produce better long-term outcome than short-term high intensity treatment
programs.
- Self-selection by client on the basis of content rather than random referral by an
outside agency that has little understanding of the unique nature of the client.
- The absence of the social pressures implicit in a face-to-face relationship with a
therapist.
- Some individuals are concerned about threats to confidentiality associated with
visiting a clinic.
- Many people find an online relationship to be more convenient.
Practical Considerations
While there is a fee for online consultative services, it is
affordable by most people, and is likely to be considerably less expensive than
face-to-face treatment.
