The Privilege of Self-Determination

Not everyone who abuses alcohol or psychoactive drugs is seriously impaired.  Many are quite capable of self-determination.  For such individuals there may be iatrogenic consequences of intrusive therapy.  There is considerable research suggesting that less intense treatment strategies produce superior outcome than more intensive treatment strategies

Because substance abusers are so different there is no one correct path, and for a given individual some paths are much better than others.  Those with the intellect to have made it through this dense material are self-selected as high functioning and may respond well to minimal external influence.  This web site provides information about some of the universal bio-psycho-social principles that pertain to addiction and self-determination.
